Darjeeling unrest: West Bengal child rights body raps GJM for using Kids News, India

After being pulled up from the Calcutta High Court because of its indefinite strike call in the Darjeeling hills, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has now been served as a show-cause notice from the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR).

Accepting suo-moto cognizance, the WBCPCR on Thursday served a note to the Morcha looking explanation as to why children were utilized in its political rallies. The commission says that the move could possibly ‘damage’ the cognitive and physical growth of those children who were made to take part in the rally.

On Wednesday, the Morcha had shot out a rally in Darjeeling where children were seen walking with Nepali knives or Khukuris in their hands.

The commission says that it’s taken cognisance of this subject where “children in shackled states were exposed to violent pursuits and were utilized at a political procession”. The Morcha has been given a week’s time to explain why action shouldn’t be initiated from the party for violating the rights of children.

Meanwhile, a meeting of fourteen hill based societal and political organisations convened from the GJM took place in Kalimpong district. The assembly decided to continue the shutdown in the hills to push its Gorkhaland state requirement that was separate .

Though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee revealed her government’s stand that there wasn’t any doubt of dividing Bengal. Slamming the BJP for stoking the unrest in the hills, Mamata said, “They can’t repair the unrest in Kashmir and they are attempting to foment trouble in Darjeeling. Will never enable division of Bengal until my last breath”
