FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — A Florida couple was charged Wednesday with 700 counts of child abuse, sexual abuse and other crimes against 11 kids they adopted or embraced for seven years while living in Alabama.
Florence Police detective Sgt. Brad Holmes told local press that 47-year-old Daniel W. Spurgeon confronts 388 counts. His 52-year-old wife, Jenise Spurgeon, confronts 312 counts.
Both are jailed in Fort Myers, Florida, where they have pleaded not guilty. Jenise Spurgeon was detained through a court hearing at Florida on the Alabama warrants. Holmes stated when he posts bail in Florida Daniel Spurgeon would be detained on the Alabama warrants.
If either comes with a attorney, it’s uncertain.
Holmes said police seek to have both of them.
Since they have been contacted about crimes the couple committed in Cape Coral, 21, Florence police have been exploring.
“Their investigation led detectives to believe that abuse had occurred at Alabama while the couple resides in the Florence region,” Holmes said.
He said victims ranged in age. The couple moved to Florida. After they responded to a call involving two teenagers in the summer 2016, police in Cape Coral started investigating them.
Daniel Spurgeon is charged with 115 counts of same-sex intercourse abuse, 122 counts of child abuse, four counts of first-degree sodomy, four counts of sexual torture, and three counts of domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation, six counts of first-degree rape, and 115 counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes, six counts of incest and 11 counts of first-degree human trafficking two counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12.
Jenise Spurgeon is charged 100 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and 100 counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes, with 100 counts of child abuse, 1 count of domestic violence by suffocation or strangulation, 11 counts of human trafficking.
Holmes stated Florence police have conducted extensive interviews.
“We’re very careful not to rush to judgment, to be extremely comprehensive,” he explained.
